  1. I attended this animation industry panel today and I wonder whether what they said is true. They say that companies look for people who are open to everything, the kinds of a generalist. But if I work for so many years on animation, should I be open to, lets say, modeling, even if Pixar offers me the job (which I think is highly unlikely). But of course that doesn't mean that I only do animation and absolutely do not care about anything else. I do know how to model and assign textures and rig characters to a decent extent. So should I be adding all of that in my reel to prove that I do have knowledge about the rest? I wonder!
I realize I sound all confused.

  2. Saberi, I think what they meant was that being a generalist 'helps' - without taking away the fact that we need to be professional at our core skill.

Smaller studios often prefer generalists who can multi-task and save on time and budget. Bigger studios post specific job profiles (separate for animators/ modelers/ texture artists etc) and they hire the one catering their specific need.

As far as I understand it - it's important to 'study' in and out - what the employer is looking for, and then tailoring the reel accordingly. So unless they say they're looking for animators who can also model - it's a better idea to just have animation-speicifc reel. And if you want you can mention about modeling/texturing etc in your additional skills on Resume.
