Cameron Fielding - animator extraordinare on...life and animation

Cameron Fielding, a really spectacular animator whom you might know from his Turok reel as well as some great shots in How to Tame a Dragon wrote a really insightful post on what it's like relocating, managing your career as an animator and taking risks down to how to negotiate relocation costs.

Presumably, if you're stubborn enough to pick up and move to another country to learn this arcane art of animation, you'll find a lot to relate to in this.

His reel...

  1. Thanks for sharing this Jeff! I'm an international student, and I'm married. I can totally relate with the academic, professional and personal challenges Cameron mentions.

I'd like to add one tiny thought - just the way Animation Mentor revolutionized the idea of WHERE one needs to be to learn animation, I also think it's very important to de-centralize the animation market and create more opportunities in other places too - not for outsourcing or DVD editions. But for feature content that has something 'local' to offer.

I really admire how people like Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori, Miyazaki etc helped develop a local animation market that made a global influence. It would be fun to see how other countries tell their own animated stories, instead of Hollywood's (though research-based) interpretation of their culture. It will come with lots of time and experience, and yes there are economic differences - but I'm sure decentralization will eventually bring more variety to the stuff we've been watching!
